In mid-1979, the president of the Metalworkers Union of São Bernardo do Campo and Diadema, Luís inácio Lula da Silva, contacted the director Renato Tapajós to invite him to film the strike that had begun in the ABC Paulista and was holding its assemblies at the Vila Euclides Stadium. From there came the idea of recording footage of what would lead to the films Linha de Montagem and Greve de Março, whose original title would be "Let no one ever again dare to doubt the workers' capacity to fight". Due to the federal intervention and the suspension of the strike to establish a negotiation period, the original title and ideas of the film - which were more comprehensive - were changed. Made in the heat of the 1979 strikes in the ABC, Greve de Março ended up having the immediate objective of becoming an instrument of political articulation around the objectives of the strike.
In the words of Tapajós: "It was not just a register or a reflection of the events, but an instrument that interfered directly in the course of the events themselves. What I know how to say is that the objective of the film was to interfere in the process, and to take what was happening, to select, from that process that we had managed to film until then, certain moments in which the development of the struggle was more acute and articulate this in a structure that, thrown back to the workers, who had participated in that, would provoke discussions and provoke, above all, the need to continue the struggle."
Em meados de 1979, o presidente do Sindicato dos Metalúrgicos de São Bernardo do Campo e Diadema, Luís inácio Lula da Silva, entrou em contato com o diretor Renato Tapajós para convidá-lo a filmar a greve que havia começado no ABC paulista e estava realizando suas assembleias no Estádio da Vila Euclides. A partir daí surgiu a ideia das filmagens que originaria os filmes Linha de Montagem e Greve de Março, cujo título original seria "Que ninguém nunca mais ouse duvidar da capacidade de luta dos trabalhadores". Devido à intervenção federal e a suspensão da greve para estabelecer um período de negociação, o título e ideias originais do filme – que eram mais abrangentes – foram alterados. Realizado no calor das greves de 1979 no ABC, Greve de Março acabou por ter um objetivo imediato de constituir-se num instrumento de articulação política em torno dos objetivos da greve.
Nas palavras de Tapajós: "Não se tratava apenas de um registro ou de uma reflexão dos acontecimentos, mas um instrumento que interferisse diretamente no próprio curso dos acontecimentos. O que sei dizer é que o objetivo do filme era interferir no processo, ea pegar aquilo que estava acontecendo, selecionar, daquele processo que a gente tinha conseguido filmar até ali, determinados momentos em que o desenvolvimento da luta estava mais agudo e articular isso numa estrutura que, jogada de volta aos operários, que tinham participado daquilo, provocasse discussões e provocasse, sobretudo, a necessidade de continuidade da luta."
