"They hunted Lula, but here there are 80 thousand Lulas," this is one of the potent phrases used by politically persecuted workers in Greve!, a documentary by João Batista de Andrade that records the 1979 strikes for better wages and working conditions in the ABC Paulista region. At the time, the then-strike leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva commanded the largest of the strikes. In this social portrait, we are introduced to the point of view of people outside and inside the demonstrations, the wives of the metalworkers, the workers who resisted police intervention, and the weakness of the unions, at a time when the strikers were wondering what to do amidst the persecution and hunting of the workers' leaders. Greve! presents a more external and totalizing view of the labor movement, filmmaker João Batista de Andrade tries to fit in the metalworkers' strikes as an observer of the consequence of exploitation.
